The National Library of Medicine has launched a preview of a redesigned PubMed interface. A link to the new version is now available on the current version of PubMed.

The new interface re-organizes the search features and display options while still providing its users with access to the same 19 million records currently available via PubMed.

Give the new version a try and keep watching “What’s New” for more updates about this change.

Three new McGraw-Hill products

The OHSU Library has recently added three new McGraw-Hill products:

The products include full-text books, videos, images, and much more.  AccessSurgery includes board reviews.  AccessPharmacy and AccessSurgery include curriculum support modules.  These are on a 1-year trial, so the library would like your feedback on these resources.  Please send all comments to Dolores Judkins at judkinsd@ohsu.edu.

Web Of Science/Scopus

The OHSU Library recently made the decision to cancel our subscription to Web of Science and begin a subscription to Scopus.  This decision was made after much discussion and research.  With budget cuts looming, the cost of Web of Science was becoming prohibitive. The Scopus database includes resources not available through Web of Science, including the majority of titles included in Embase and a broader range of nursing titles.  Scopus also includes citing data, which was the major focus of Web of Science.

The OHSU community will have access to the Web of Science data from 1980-2008, but it will be installed on a local server.  We are currently working on getting this information set up, and there will be a link to it at that time.

Help with using Scopus is available at http://help.scopus.com/Robo/BIN/Robo.dll?mgr=agm&tpc=%2Frobo%2Fprojects%2Fschelp%2Fh_bscssrch.htm&wnd=schelp|ScopusHelp&agt=wsm&ctxid=scopus%2Fhome.url

If you or your department would like to learn how to use Scopus, please contact one of the reference librarians at 503-494-3471 or send a message to refer@ohsu.edu We can set up a class for a one-on-one session or a group session.  If you have questions or comments about this decision, please contact Dolores Judkins at 503-494-3478 or judkinsd@ohsu.edu

In Memory of Dianna Andes

picboard3v41

Dianna Mack Andes died on December 24, 2008. She will be greatly missed.

Dianna began working at the OHSU Library in December of 1970 and during her tenure worked with three Library directors – Margaret Hughes, James Morgan and Chris Shaffer. There have only been four directors of the OHSU Library.

Dianna worked in the Interlibrary Loans, Cataloging, Serials and Circulation departments in her first three years at the Library. In 1974 she became the administrative assistant to the Library Director and worked in Library Administration throughout the remainder of her career at OHSU.

She retired in 2004 but continued to work part time. She was the go-to person for the Library and many other departments on campus. As one of the few long-time employees still on campus, she remembered the why and how of many university processes and procedures. She was known for her willingness to share her knowledge and wisdom and was appreciated by library staff and those around campus who knew and worked with her.

There will be a funeral for Dianna at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in Farnstrom-Gable Funeral Chapel, 225 NE 80th, Portland Oregon 97213. More details about Dianna’s life are in her obituary in the Oregonian at http://obits.oregonlive.com/Oregon/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonID=122185250 . In accordance with Dianna’s wishes, remembrances should be sent to the OHSU Library.

New exhibit: Olof Larsell, Biologist, Anatomist and Historian: A Noble Quest

Olof Larsell

OHSU Historical Collections & Archives announces the opening of its new exhibit, Olof Larsell, Biologist, Anatomist, and Historian: A Noble Quest, now on display in the main lobby of the OHSU Library.

Olof Larsell was born in Rättvik, Sweden, in 1886, and moved with his family to the United States in 1891. He obtained a degree in biology from McMinnville College (now Linfield College) and completed a doctorate in the biological sciences under the direction of zoologist William A. Locy at Northwestern University. During the summers of 1913 and 1914, Larsell worked with C. Judson Herrick, then professor of neurology at the University of Chicago; Herrick encouraged Larsell to focus his research on comparative neurology and, in particular, cerebellar anatomy. Larsell’s first paper on the cerebellum was published in 1923; at the time of his death in 1964, he was completing the last chapter of a definitive, three-volume monograph on The Comparative Anatomy and Histology of the Cerebellum.

Larsell joined the University of Oregon Medical School as professor of anatomy in 1921 and served in that capacity until his mandatory retirement at the age of 65 in 1952. He went on to spend two years as professor of neuroanatomy at the University of Minnesota before returning to Portland to resume his research at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Many senior faculty on campus still remember Olof Larsell, whose classes they recall as either “inspiring” or “awful.” His magisterial work on medical history, The Doctor in Oregon, remains the most comprehensive work in the field.

To learn more about Olof Larsell and his remarkable achievements, visit the physical display in the Main Library or the virtual exhibit on the Historical Collections & Archives web site at http://www.ohsu.edu/library/hom/exhibits/.

Materials will be on display through December 2008. Questions about the exhibit or the collections can be addressed to Sara Piasecki, History of Medicine Librarian (503-418-2287, piasecki@ohsu.edu) or Karen Peterson, Archivist (503-494-3239 or peterska@ohsu.edu).

More journals avaliable through CINAHL in EBSCO

The OHSU Library has upgraded its CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Literature) with Full Text subscription in EBSCO to CINAHL Plus with Full Text.  This brings three advantages:

  • More online journals - full text for over 600 journals, many of which are available only through CINAHL
  • Greater depth of coverage – indexing goes back to 1937, instead of 1981
  • Additional resources – evidence-based care sheets and quick lessons supplement what’s available in the main database

For assistance with searching CINAHL, just drop by the library to speak with a reference librarian or call 503-494-3471 to set up an appointment.

New interface for CINAHL

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature) now has a new interface, provided by EBSCO. Though it’s still one of the databases available using the Ovid interface, CINAHL will be available solely through EBSCO after October. Getting to CINAHL on either platform remains the same; either cursor over or click on the “Databases” link on the library’s home page at http://www.ohsu.edu/library .

EBSCO’s interface provides functionality similar to Ovid’s, but it looks and performs quite differently. The basic approach to subject searching remains the same, however. There’s a good chance that if you’re familiar with Ovid’s databases, you’ll be able to use EBSCO’s interface successfully right away. If not, CINAHL via EBSCO has an Ask a Librarian link for you to submit questions (and your search strategy) to a reference librarian for evaluation and assistance.

Ask a Librarian in CINAHL

You may drop in and request individual help without prior arrangement or make an appointment with a reference librarian, either by calling 503-494-3462 or sending an email to refer@ohsu.edu. Reference librarians are also available to attend your class or department meeting to go over the new interface. There will be scheduled CINAHL classes beginning in October; go to http://www.ohsu.edu/library/classes.shtml for a schedule.

Finally, EBSCO maintains a support site with Flash and PowerPoint tutorials specifically for CINAHL searching. You may navigate to them via the Help link at the upper right corner of the CINAHL search screen or go directly to http://support.epnet.com/training/tutorials.php.

Welcome to the new OHSU Library What’s New!

For a number of years now, we have had What’s New page based on a ColdFusion database. While this worked fairly well, after a while we realized that really what we were doing was having a blog of news of what was going on with the OHSU Library. Since blog technology has greatly evolved in the last 10 years, we decided to finally take the plunge!

You can subscribe to the news on this site through the RSS feed. You can also still subscribe to the HTML email version of the news updates by going to the library listserv sign-up. In addition, we hope you will provide comments to services and resources you have an opinion about, whether positive or negative.

If you have questions or comments about this new feature, you can post them here to the blog, or alternatively email the Library Web Managers at library@ohsu.edu .
