Computer Science Technical Reports Collections goes live!

This collection is drawn from a group of reports generated by faculty, staff and students of the OGI Department of Computer Science and Engineering (now referred to as the Biomedical Computer Science Division of the Department of Science & Engineering, OHSU School of Medicine), from 1982 - 1997. The reports were formerly maintained online by the department, but due to technical limitations, BMCS was no longer able to host them.

The reports were passed on to the Diack Library (OHSU Science & Engineering Library, formerly OGI Library) in Fall 2008. The Library digitized print versions and converted unusable digital formats that so that all possible reports could be included within this collection of the OHSU Digital Resource Library. The reports are published as “open access” and are available for worldwide access.

To browse or search this collection, go to the OHSU Digital Resources Library at:  http://drl.ohsu.edu/ and click on “Computer Science Technical Reports”.

Web Of Science/Scopus

The OHSU Library recently made the decision to cancel our subscription to Web of Science and begin a subscription to Scopus.  This decision was made after much discussion and research.  With budget cuts looming, the cost of Web of Science was becoming prohibitive. The Scopus database includes resources not available through Web of Science, including the majority of titles included in Embase and a broader range of nursing titles.  Scopus also includes citing data, which was the major focus of Web of Science.

The OHSU community will have access to the Web of Science data from 1980-2008, but it will be installed on a local server.  We are currently working on getting this information set up, and there will be a link to it at that time.

Help with using Scopus is available at http://help.scopus.com/Robo/BIN/Robo.dll?mgr=agm&tpc=%2Frobo%2Fprojects%2Fschelp%2Fh_bscssrch.htm&wnd=schelp|ScopusHelp&agt=wsm&ctxid=scopus%2Fhome.url

If you or your department would like to learn how to use Scopus, please contact one of the reference librarians at 503-494-3471 or send a message to refer@ohsu.edu We can set up a class for a one-on-one session or a group session.  If you have questions or comments about this decision, please contact Dolores Judkins at 503-494-3478 or judkinsd@ohsu.edu

New Summit: bigger and better in late 2008

Big changes are in store for Summit (http://summit.orbiscascade.org), the popular library system used by OHSU students, faculty and staff to borrow books, CDs and DVDs.

Currently, Summit provides access to over 28 million items from 34 college and university libraries throughout Oregon and Washington. If you appreciate being able to choose from such a huge regional library collection, brace yourself for even more. This fall, OHSU Library staff are working with other members of the Orbis Cascade Alliance to upgrade and improve Summit. When the project is completed in 2009, you’ll be able to access over 107 million items from libraries around the world—with one easy search.

The current Summit system was installed in the mid 1990s, and although it’s been regularly upgraded since then, recent developments in library services and products all indicate that it’s time for a significant change. Working together, Alliance members have created an implementation plan for an improved Summit that promises to be more powerful and user-friendly. The upgrade of Summit requires programming for some innovative new features but also builds on work recently done by libraries in the University of California system.

Summit services will continue without interruption until the upgrade is completed, but we do want to highlight a few things for you to be aware of during the transition:

  • Continue using Summit as you normally would to find and request materials you need from other libraries. The address, summit.orbiscascade.org, will remain the same and you won’t have to submit any requests more than once.
  • You’ll still be able to see what you have checked out but, in Summit’s initial phase of development, you will need to look in two places. Library material checked out from OHSU Library will appear in our online catalog (http://catalogs.ohsu.edu/), while material from other libraries will appear in Summit.
  • Courier service between Orbis Cascade Alliance member libraries is not changing and will continue to be fast and reliable. Turnaround time is usually three days – and often less!
  • There will be some temporary changes in Summit’s ability to process renewals. For a limited time, Summit borrowing will be restricted to the initial loan period. However, as soon as feasible, the capacity for renewing will be restored.
  • Library staff will be on a learning curve as programming is tested, workflows change, and we implement the new Summit. Your patience and flexibility during this time of change are appreciated.

We’re confident that you’ll appreciate the enhancements in store for this important service. If you’d like more information about the new Summit, read the FAQ at http://www.orbiscascade.org/index/new-summit or ask a library staff person.
